For the longest time this space looked so plain. It had the essential...table and chairs but was really lacking warmth and was not decorated in the least. I have twin seven year olds and this is where they eat and work on art projects. This space can get incredibly MESSY! In addition to being a place the kids use we host smaller more casual dinner parties in this space. It needs to be not only practical but pretty and welcoming.
I could not, unfortunately, add a rug. Food is constantly dropping on the floor along with paint, slime and glue. Who knew one needed SOOOOO much glue in creating works of art? So what could one add to a breakfast nook to bring in color, and texture...a bit of softness?
These placemats live on the table full time. They look like real wicker but can be rinsed off!
To start I added chandelier shade with a pattern. This gave the light source a far more custom look. Next, I addressed the walls. We only have narrow wall spaces between the large picture windows so I added gorgeous Ralph Lauren salad plates. Truth be told I have always admired this collect but buying a enough for a dinner party is not in the cards right now considering the cost! Hanging them all the wall allows me to enjoy this beautiful pattern and only have to buy three plates.
I think the biggest change to the space was installing cafe curtains. They added a softness and warmth the space desperately needed. They were/are very inexpensive. The curtain rod is from Target and the pinch pleat drapes and rings are from Amazon (hemmed by yours truly).
Tip when hanging cafe curtains- they should just brush the top of your window sill.
I am really pleased with how the the spaced came out. It works for my kids and makes for a pretty little dining space for smaller dinner parties.
